No, I’m not catholic

I’m at work. Running reports etc… and I receive an invite from the catholic church to assist with the pope.
There is a grande celebration and he will be out in the streets. I think in my dream it is actually the Obama inauguration.
I fly to Rome. It’s okay because somehow this is work related. Work is paying for it. My boss knows where I am.
When I arrive I come upon a large crowd of people cheering. To the right I see the papal hat (is there a name for that?). He is outside of his normal driving/protected box. There is one fellow behind him watching. Obviously the bodyguard. The pope reaches out to a man and grabs his torso just below the armpits. He turns his face to the man. The pope’s eyes are cross eyed. The seem to be going to either side of the man. The man is confused. He can not make eye contact with the pope. The pope lifts the man into the air – holds him there for a few seconds and sets him down. The crowd jostles and cheers as the pope moves through the crowd and lifts individuals.
I am now the bodyguard. I follow the pope through the crowd and watch as he isolates the revelers. They all have trouble focusing on the pope. A few seem to find focus before they are lifted. They nearly faint away when he sets him down again. I continue to follow and wonder to myself at how weird it is that I’m the bodyguard since I am not only not catholic, but I am not even a christian.
The pope turns to me and I am confronted with his wavering eyes. He reaches and grabs hold of my body. Firm hands on my sides. At first it seems that neither eye is focused on me – that they are looking to either side. Then I notice that only his left eye is looking to the side. We make contact – me with two eyes, the pope with only his right eye. There is a moment of contented silence. The noise from the crowd dies away. He lifts and I feel an elation rush through my body. Similar to going over the top on a roller coaster… but more steady.. more prolonged.
He sets me down. I wake up.

January 6, 2009 at 3:21 pm | In Poems | Leave a CommentWhen I was 42 I looked back on my life.
I wondered at the state of the world and where I’d been.
not too long ago there were concentration camps in the U.S. Thankfully we only stole their money and didn’t slaughter them en masse…
15 years ago I lived a different life
I went to church
I taught kids about church
I taught kids about t-ball
I did artistic things for a wage
10 years ago I lived a different life
I was on the cutting edge
I got caught up in the comforts of being comfortable.
Church? no.
5 years ago I lived a different life and started thinking about my previous lives
I ran
I got antsy with being comfortable.
and then I moved on lived yet another different life.

What do I think of the last one?
Long drives
patience
visits to lives’ past
And a step
toward reality
and where I want to be

I grab my coffee and sit. The brown slip cover collapses — dormant —- the coffee shop sofa. It’s soft. I feel a spring. I wonder if there is dampness. What stories are there in its invisible stains? Surely it’s life has seen more bizarre things than mine.
