CATHARTES AURA / GOLDEN PURIFIER

Foreboding
It’s a narrow trail
dusty
Manzanita line the path
their normal vibrancy
deep green leaves
red bark bright
sinewy and alive
with the moisture of morning
now dull brown and dry
leaves sun bleached and pale
from lack of water
hot beating sun
heat waves crash like wind
Two pendants
Statues from the gods ahead
oppose the trail
Cylindrical posts topped with beasts
They scavange
and their ugly heads are
symbols of purity
cleaning
existing energy.
My approach is guarded
Their heads swivel to me
and watch my steady approach
Dark figures they are
no panic
no flee
I wonder if they await my death
So that they can clean the land…
and just as I see the wrinkles
the expression on their sun red faces
they take flight and rise on the wind
I pass their posts
entry into a new land
below me shadows
of them above
Watching.

July 22, 2008 at 5:00 pm | In Musings, Running | Leave a CommentThere are yellow jackets.
I was once again STUNG by a yellow jacket on a run. 2 times… this little fellow got me. I believe he is now dead. I whacked him with my hand (which he did not manage to sting). Stung me at the base of my neck. It’s now to the point of being pretty itchy.
So I looked up some things.
Yellow Jacket repellent does not exist.
If you know of a nest
avoid it
If you are stung
leave the area
If you are stung in a sensitive area
seek professional assistance
do not wait for symptoms to develop.
Yellow jackets are mimicked by other insects
why? because they’re nasty!
Sometimes yellow jackets have white spots… WHAT?!
So what came first, the yellow jacket or the honey bee? I did not find an answer to this.
If stung by a yellow jacket mimic, should I follow the steps above?
Are there repellents for these mimics?
If you know of a nest, and must go through the area, is it better to go first and as quickly as you can, or is it better to push someone in front of you? I have gone first and second multiple times. And had good and bad results both ways. Mostly just bad results when there is a known nest. I think my one good result was one sting, when other folks were getting more than 10.
My life is full of yellow jackets.
and some mimics
and sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference.
and sometimes you’re somewhere and you’re sure there would be yellow jackets, but there aren’t.
and sometimes you’re somewhere … and you don’t hear a thing – you don’t see a thing – and you’re stung, bitten, mauled. Multiple times. Viciously. As if they’ve nothing better to do. The next thing you know you can feel the venom running through the blood vessels of your neck, arms and skull. It feels like it’s just below the surface of the skin. tingly…
and so. what is it? what is this? This is a babble about giving in – accepting. In life, there are yellow jackets. You can hole up and hope they don’t find you – or you can just go out and deal with it when they do.
I do feel sorry for those folks that are allergic.
Goat
July 17, 2008 at 3:28 pm | In Poems, Running | 1 CommentI am the goat
a billy
Up hills. Across gullies
under trees, through bushes
around and through crystal streams
I’ve been stung by bitter jackets
and scorched by the raging sun
I’ve breathed fire
rain and snow
and I’ve clung to cliff edges
I’ve looked on people from a distance
watched them like ants
and wondered why they wonder at me
as I stand on what looks so precarious a place to them
yet so secure to me
I am the goat
frequently I am alone
furry and self sufficient
I’m wary and aloof
few want to befriend me
And so I am
the goat
a billy.
oh the dentist

has truth in that humor.
I willingly had a filling removed so that I could get a new improved crown today.
It was big
When I got the original filling in 1989 it was some of the worst pain I’ve ever had
and yet I went willingly today
What is it with the dentist’s allure?
And now.. hours later after the novicane has worn off
I’m almost happy
I’ve no pain
my dentist is brilliant!
Odd…. even though he gave me a painful shot to numb the pain
and pried my mouth open for 15 minutes with a rubber device
that was, in his own words, “new and experimental”
“let’s see how you like it”
And when I got back to work I had to clean a blood spot off my glasses
Wonderful
and then there is how much I’m paying for this privilege
Ahh well.
Better than a yellow jacket sting in the ass.
To Dentists! I raise my glass!
Pour me a stiff one.

Did I dream?
Excuse me?
<Wink>
And there it is again
I wonder…
Is she?
<wink>
Yes, she is.
Could be an eye twitch
could be a flirt
<nothing>
and it’s gone
maybe I can catch her eye
smile
maybe she can’t see my eyes through my glasses?
<nothing>
Wink

Wink Wink
<nothing>
Maybe it’ll cut the glare if I lift my head?
WINK
